Chap Goh Meh

Posted on: 23/02/2010

Here are pink waterlilies to mark the Chap Goh Meh Lantern Festival and the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. All over the world, Chinese people become hardworking again!

Holbein watercolours on Fabriano Artistico Extra White Hot pressed paper 9 x 12”.

And instead of the ubiquitous old boring oranges, here are two varieties of the auspicious pineapple for the lunar new year – wang lai!

This is the popular Sarikei variety, sweet, juicy and crisp.

Fabriano Studio cold pressed 130lbs paper 12 x18” with Winsor & Newton colours, New Gamboge, Phthalo blue, Oxide of Chromium, Permanent Alizarin and Diozaxine purple.

This red one, according to the fruitseller, is imported from Johor.

I can’t tell you if it is good eating because by the time I completed my pencil roughs, my colour roughs, my detailed pencil drawing and my colour study, the fruit was well on its way to becoming BEER.

Cotmans cold pressed 130lbs paper 12 x 18” with Winsor & Newton colours – New Gamboge, Permanent Alizarin, Diozaxine purple, Phthalo blue, Raw Sienna and Holbein’s Vermilion.

One rainy night, a little tree frog hopped in my kitchen door in pursuit of some juicy insect.

9 x 12” 140lb Whatman rough paper with Holbein colours, raw sienna for the frog with a bit of purple for the shadows and the dark night background is built up with successive layers of rose, bamboo green and phthalo blue.

At Santubong

I was practicing painting backlit waves crashing against the rocks. This is where, in the surging tide, the half submerged rocks look unnervingly like a crocodile.

Done on 15 x 11” Lana aquarelle 140lbs rough paper with Winsor & Newton colours. This is a fine quality French made paper I bought some years ago, quite expensive but a joy to use. My amateurish washes came out brilliant, the textures beautiful, I began to have a glimpse of what might be possible if only I practice more!
