Painting Kuching in Watercolour

Archive for July 2012

Here’s Binkie, now a happy balanced dog! Every morning she accompanies me on half an hour walk/run, eats two good quality meals a day, followed by a crunchy snack or two. Like my other dog Sootie, her favourite snack is Jacobs biscuit smeared with Lady’s Choice peanut butter. Note the new potbelly!

I have been busy working my way through this interesting book.

It shows how to paint botanicals colour by colour.  I often use a limited palette and was impressed to see just how many colours professional botanical artists had to use to get a correct colour match for their subject.  Starting with white colour, there are step by step demonstrations by the artists with simplified drawings for students to try out following the artists’ methods.  Unfortunately for me, most of the flowers featured are temperate ones, like lilies, peonies, poppies, rhododendrons.  The only flower featured I have seen up close is the sunflower! Here is my attempt at Paul Fennell SBA ‘s “Sunflower”.
